Waste Audit

Why Conduct a Waste Audit?

Find out what's in your waste stream! This will help you focus your recycling and waste reduction efforts appropriately. A waste audit can be used to determine how effective your current waste diversion efforts are. By better understanding the sources of your waste, and changing practices to minimize what goes into the trash can or dumpster, you can save money as well as natural resources.

The US EPA provides instructions for 3 different waste audit methods. Though it may require more effort to conduct a physical waste sort of one day's worth of waste, this method provides quantitative data to describe the different components of the waste stream by volume and/or weight.
